Perfume thief sent to ‘Mental’

A 35-year-old man, who was on the run after stealing a $173 bottle on perfume from Cave Shepherd in March last year, will spend the next three weeks at the Psychiatric Hospital being assessed by doctors.

According to the prosecutor, Raphael Joslyn Scotland, of no fixed place of abode, entered the Broad Street store just before 9 a.m. on March 10, 2017 and went to the perfume and cosmetics section located on the ground floor.

He snatched the item and ran out of the store with security guards hot on his heels. He ran through, Broad Street onto the Chamberlin Bridge towards the Fairchild Street area, before the guards lost sight of him in Nelson Street.

However, Scotland’s luck ran out on Sunday when he was spotted near a local fast food chain on Board Street. He was arrested and charged.

In the docks of the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today, he told Magistrate Douglas Frederick: “I have thoughts. All of us have them and I let them overtake my mental faculties and body and actions.”

He returns to court on April 3.

Seems like young Scotland is in quite good possession of his faculties (if no longer of the perfume tester he ran with). We hope Magistrate Frederick will remember how bad things are smelling in Barbados these days. Do the right thing Cave Shepherd. Drop charges and protect your brand’s faltering goodwill.
