Stuart wins beach wrestling title

Renaldo Stuart emerged victorious at Sunday’s inaugural Barbados Beach Games/Beach Wrestling Super 8 Seniors Division to become the 2016 Beast of the Beach champion.

The event was held at Pirates Cove Beach under the auspices of the Barbados Olympic Association.

Stuart, the Lions Den Wrestling Club veteran wrestler, worked his way into the final against Francois Jones of Sanda Barbados League after engaging successfully in some hard fought elimination encounters against Dario Waithe, Justin Taylor and Kobe Bowen.

Beach wrestling sport is one of the activities of the Olympic wrestling world body – United World Wrestling, of which the Barbados Wrestling Association is a member. Every year the Pan American Beach Wrestling Championship is held in Colombia.

The match of the day, however, was between Nadia Dacosta of St Gabriel’s Primary and Rebecca Williams of St Silas Primary in the Girls 8-11 Open Division. Williams was able to capture the gold with a single leg takedown to break a 2-2 deadlock.

Dominic Broome of Coleridge & Parry defeated Jalen Stoute of St Leonard’s to capture gold in the Schoolboys Open.

Twenty primary school juniors from St Silas, St Gabriel’s and Wills participated in Sunday’s tourney.
