JAMAICA – JDF soldiers head to Haiti

KINGSTON – Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) personnel are scheduled to leave Jamaica today for Port Au Prince, Haiti with relief supplies. The effort is in response to the devastating impact Hurricane Matthew had on the country on October 4.

The soldiers will travel on a United States C130 Heracles military aircraft (provided by the US Embassy) which arrived in Jamaica on October 18.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) says eight military personnel from the JDF will travel with the shipment which contains quantities of food supplies, water, infant products and tarpaulins.

ODPEM says items were procured with funding through the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and pprocurement, management and logistics services were provided by them.

The initiative is being coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, The Jamaica Customs Agency, The Airports Authority of Jamaica, Jamaica Defence Force, Jamaica Constabulary Force, US Embassy (Kingston) and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).
