Blackout in some St Thomas communities

Residents of some communities in St Thomas were without electricity up until late this evening after a transformer exploded felling a utility pole close to Sharon Moravian Church.

As a result, the Sharon Road was left impassable.

Resident David ‘Joey’ Harper, who witnessed the incident, said he heard a loud “boom” as a 40-foot container truck was passing through the area.

“It also sounded like something was dropped into a hole or ran on the sidewalk or something like that,” Harper told Barbados TODAY.

“Obviously everything went out and the container just drove pass, which he [the driver] had to do anyhow, because there was danger involved. He got out and came back. Then people started to assemble.”

Harper said the greatest worry for residents was the loss of electricity.

Up to late this evening emergency crews were working to restore power to the area with Police Public Relations Officer Acting Inspector Roland Cobbler telling Barbados TODAY the work was unlikely to be completed tonight.

Police are therefore asking motorists to avoid the Sharon road for the time being.
