ERHA launches investigation

PORT OF SPAIN – Days before her baby was due, Shevana Sookram went for a regular check-up at hospital on Tuesday. Only to learn that her baby had died inside of her.

Sookram, 31, would be dead before midnight, after medical complications during the operation to remove the body of her baby girl. Sookram was the mother of two children, boys aged two and ten.

She lived with the father of the two-year-old at Vega De Oropouche Road, Sangre Grande. Her death has come as a shock to family and friends who on Tuesday were admiring her baby-bump photos that she had posted on Facebook.

Her brother, Anil Sookram, told Express Multimedia: “I heard she was due on Sunday. And on Tuesday she went to the clinic at the Sangre Grade Hospital for a check up”.

He said that while there, Sookram began having pains.

“They did some checks on her and they found there was no movement with the baby. They found out the baby had died”.

The brother said that Sookram was taken in for surgery, but complications developed. She died at around 8 p.m.

He said: “She had heard the baby had died. They tried to stabilise her condition. But they never did”.

An autopsy will be done on Thursday to determine the cause of death of mother and baby.

The Eastern Regional Health Authority has expressed condolences to the Sookram family.

The Authority said that an investigation had been launched and it was in contact with the family to provide information and counselling.

In a statement on Wednesday afternoon the Eastern Regional Health Authority said:

“The ERHA wishes to advise that Shevana Sookram, a 31 year old mother from Vega De Oropouche Sangre Grande died at the Sangre Grande Hospital on September 20, 2016. Ms Sookram who was an antenatal patient at the Sangre Grande Hospital was visiting the hospital on said day for her routine clinic appointment. The patient was experiencing contractions and was warded. During examination, no heart beat was detected for the baby. An ultra sound was done which confirmed foetal demise. The unborn child was delivered. However, after delivery of the baby the mother developed complications and subsequently died later that evening. A thorough investigation has been launched into the matter”.

In this day and time? She dies? I understand how that can happen with the baby. But still horrible.
