Father on trial

Dad accused of willfully exposing five-month-old

courtA police officer yesterday testified in the case against Dave Anthony Searles, who is accused of willfully exposing his five-month-old son Ethan in a manner likely to cause injury to his health.

The child’s lifeless body was discovered in the back seat of Searles’ car, which was parked outside his workplace in Brittons Hill, St Michael on December 5, 2012.

Searles, who has pleaded not guilty to the charge, is being represented by attorney-at-law Branford Taitt Jr.

Yesterday, Constable Paul Prescod, who responded to the incident, in which the child died four years ago, was the only witness to take to the stand.

The officer told the court, presided over by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant, he and his colleagues responded to a report received at the Hastings Police Station.

Prescod said when they arrived on the scene, they were met by Kelly Trotman, who identified her as the owner of the Diva World Hair Salon, Villa Road, Brittons Hill.

He said Trotman then directed him to a grey motorcar, registration number XH315, which was parked in a driveway on the southern side of the salon, facing forward.

Prescod told the court that he observed a multi-coloured child seat in the rear of the car.

“I further observed an infant sitting in the child seat wearing a white vest . . . . The infant appeared lifeless,” Prescod said, adding that the scene was then secured.

The case resumes on November 17.

Exposing the child to what? This story is so poor? No idea of how the child died.
