Union demands BVTB upgrade for demonstrators
The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is calling for the upgrading of demonstrators employed at the Barbados Vocational Training Board (BVTB) to the level of Instructor Grade 3 as obtained at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP).
NUPW Acting Assistant General Secretary Wayne Walrond told Barbados TODAY that over the past ten years the NUPW had been asking the BVTB and other relevant ministries such as the Ministry of the Civil Service and the Ministry of Labour, to upgrade the demonstrators.
The senior trade unionist said over the years demonstrators had moved from merely doing demonstrations, to added duties in terms of the delivery of the vocations.
He said their job descriptions and qualification requirements could be compared to at least Instructor Grade 3 at the Polytechnic.
“The Barbados Vocational Training Board has moved to a semester system. It has developed a more rounded curriculum where it is not just the hands on practical, but other subjects have been introduced,” Walrond told Barbados TODAY.
He said the union supported calls by demonstrators to upgrade their status because there was a clear justification for it.
