LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE…. A 60-year-old American visitor appeared in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court today on theft charges.

David Joseph Mello of No 72 Belmont Street, Fall Drive, Massachusetts, USA admitted to Magistrate Douglas Frederick that he stole 12 Ralph Lauren shirts from Cave Shepherd yesterday.

Police prosecutor Theodore McClean revealed that Mello, who is on island for a week’s vacation, entered the Broad Street store and proceeded to the men’s section where the Ralph Lauren merchandise was located.

He then took up a number of items and went to the changing room. Mello would later come out and pay for two shirts, then walk around the store for a while.

On leaving the store, he was approached by security on duty and a search was requested. The items were found in a bag he was carrying. He admitted to stealing the items.

Asked whether he had anything to say, Mello said: “I regret doing it, but I have nothing to add.”

“Why would you steal shirts?” the District “A” Magistrate asked.

    “I don’t know,” a fidgety Mello answered.

Mello, who is booked to leave the island on July 5, was ordered to pay $500 forthwith or face the alternative of three months imprisonment.

It was not immediately clear if the fine was paid.
