A Jamaican musician has been jailed for attempting to smuggle 1.5 kilogrammes of cannabis into Barbados last week.
Dervent Anthony Bartlett, 38, had swallowed the weed in his attempt to avoid getting caught.
He pleaded guilty to the August 9 charges of possession, trafficking, intent to supply and importation, when he appeared before Magistrate Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell Wednesday.
When he came through the Grantley Adams International Airport last Tuesday, his luggage was searched by Customs officials, Sergeant Wendell Greenidge told the District ‘B’ Magistrates Court. They found no drugs in his luggage during the search.
However, he was handed over to police who interviewed him before taking him to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where an x-ray revealed 102 packages in his intestines.
Bartlett was sentenced to 18 months in jail on the count of trafficking, and was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the counts of possession, intent to supply and importation.
