JAMAICA – On-campus shooting forces UWI Mona lockdown

KINGSTON – A shooting incident Tuesday night triggered a full lockdown of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), several students have reported.

According to the students, the university sent out a campus-wide text message warning them not to leave their halls of residence and urging off-campus students to get home “as quick and as safe as you can”.

“All persons living on hall, be advised [that] due to a shooting on campus, it is now on lockdown. Do not leave [your] hall and go walking about,” read a section of the message shared with The Gleaner.

“Shooter wearing red shirt and was last seen headed down to the bowl side,” the message continued.

It was later revealed that a taxi operator was the victim of the shooting.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) confirmed that he was shot on the UWI campus shortly after 9 o’clock.

CCU said the taxi operator was in critical but stable condition at hospital and that investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.
