Jahan’s mother and her boyfriend denied bail again
Another attempt by the attorney-at-law representing Jahan King’s mother Lasonta Gill and her boyfriend Dwayne Marshall to secure bail for the two failed today, with Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant again remanding the couple to HMP Dodds.
The prosecution again objected to bail for the two who are facing charges of unlawfully killing six-year-old Jahan last year.
The boy died on June 29, 2015 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after he was taken there by ambulance. An autopsy revealed he had died as a result of blunt force trauma.
When the pregnant Gill, 26, and her 35-year-old boyfriend reappeared before Cuffy-Sargeant in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court this morning, Station Sergeant Janice Ifill maintained her position that they should not be granted bail.
However, defence attorney Samuel Legay submitted that it had to be “something more substantial”, and he would “wait to see when the file will be concluded, but the reality is that it is going to be another year or two from now”.
Insisting that both accused were “fit and proper candidates for bail”, Legay reminded the court that relatives of the accused were on hand to stand as sureties in the matter.
However, the magistrate turned down the bail application and remanded the couple again. They return to court on September 13.
