Inwon the one to win
The brothers Dan and Martin Raizman-owned Inwon is ready to face a strong field of eight in the Season Of Emancipation Handicap which runs off this Saturday at the Garrison Savannah.
Inwon is fresh from a thrilling victory last race day in the Saleh And Khatija Mohammed Memorial Handicap over Daunting David going 11 furlongs. He is the leading imported three-year-old and in 2015 commenced the year unbeaten in his first three starts before losing to Cavanak on June 6, 2015. The bay son of Belmont Stakes winner Bird Stone, returned to races on May 28 from a long lay-off having not raced since November last year and finished third to Dazzling David over the sprint trip of 1100 meters.
The $16 000 1570 meters event has also attracted Inwon’s stablemate Infrared who also started his three-year-old career unbeaten. Infrared won his first four starts this year after suffering his first lost for the year in the St Ann’s Handicap on June 11 to the grey Snow Storm who is also entered in the line-up.
In the St Ann’s Handicap Snow Storm took 110 pounds, receiving three pounds from the colt Infrared. However this time around in the Emancipation Handicap Inwon is handicapped at the large impost of 131 pounds, giving some 21 pounds to Snow Storm at 110 again. If Inwon pulls off this giant-killing act on Snow Storm he will no doubt be called a monster by race fans.
Snow Storm had a disappointing run in the Saleh And Khatija Mohammed Memorial Handicap going 11 furlongs last race day July 9 after starting as one of the short price favourites finishing off the board. However the reduction in distance could be key after she had won her first race for the year going 1570 meters in the Miss Judes Handicap on April 28.
Donicodidit, trained by 2016 Gold Cup-winning trainer Robert “Papa” Peirce, ran a game third going 11 furlongs in the Saleh And Khatija Mohammed Memorial Handicap to Inwon and Daunting David and will take the second top weight of 123 pounds. The winner of the 2015 Midsummer Classic and Brydens And Stokes Breeders Classic can be a spoiler once he comes with his ‘A’ game.
Wheyshewent who won her last start on June 25 in the Pinnacle Feeds Animal Nutrition Trophy Handicap at the shorter trip of 1100 meters could be in with a shot in the exciting finish. The daughter of Tale Of Ekati will take 110 pounds.
Vitality from the John Chandler barn has been very consistent lately, running two seconds and one third in his last three starts. The 2014 Spa Sprint winner ran a game third to Lucky Adventure last race day going 1100 meters and can’t be left out of the betting. He has also been staying on in his races and the 7.8 trip will be no problem as he had ran second to Snow Storm in the Miss Judes Handicap on April 28. Arrowhead and Little Man Arran round off the exciting field which is expected to have a tight finish.
The two-year old juveniles will be making their debuts in Race 1 the Bayley’s Plantation Condition Race with Legion looking the most forward at gallops. Legion is a son of Happy Memories, out of the 1999 Barbados Guineas winner Devil Woman who is coming out of the inform champion trainer Victor Cheeseman’s barn. Watch That Birdie also looked like an early sort at morning gallops. The daughter of freshman sire Bird Watch, out of the Halos Image mare Shower of Roses also from the Cheeseman barn, could go close.
Soul To Soul has caught the eye at gallops. This son of Happy Memories, out of Body And Soul and making him a half-brother to top 2015 three-year-old Donicodidit, will be looking to follow in his big brother’s footsteps. Soul To Soul is from the Aysha Stables, the same owners as top Barbados horse Just A Fashion and is trained by Anderson Ward.
Post time for the eight-race card is 1.45 p.m.
