Husbands, Poon start well in tourney

Barbadian Fide Masters Orlando Husbands and Yu Tien Poon have made a good start in the CAC Under-20 Chess Championship being played in El Salvador.

This year’s championship sees 25 of the region’s top junior players vie for the title of CAC Junior Champion which also confers the International Master title on the winner.

Husbands, the reigning CARIFTA Under-20 champion, is the number four seed. In round one he won comfortably against Oscar Valencia of El Salvador and then battled to a draw in round two against fellow Barbadian Yu Tien Poon who is ranked at no.11 in the tournament.

Yu Tien Poon was also victorious in round one against Luis Ariza of El Salvador.

The competition will no doubt intensify in round three when Husbands meets the fast improving Alejandro Rodriguez Nieto of the Dominican Republic and Poon squares off against the Honduran Edward Cantillano who pulled off a major upset in round one when he defeated the highly rated Colombian candidate Master Santiago Garcia Quinonez.

Locally, the second National Qualifier continues tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the Bridgetown Chess Centre, Bridge House, Cavans Lane, St Michael.
