American visitor steals 12 Ralph Lauren shirts

courtA 60-year-old American visitor appeared in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court today on theft charges.

David Joseph Mello of No 72 Belmont Street, Fall Drive, Massachusetts, USA admitted to Magistrate Douglas Frederick that he stole 12 Ralph Lauren shirts from Cave Shepherd yesterday.

Police prosecutor Theodore McClean revealed that Mello, who is on island for a week’s vacation, entered the Broad Street store and proceeded to the men’s section where the Ralph Lauren merchandise was located.

He then took up a number of items and went to the changing room. Mello would later come out and pay for two shirts, then walk around the store for a while.

On leaving the store, he was approached by security on duty and a search was requested. The items were found in a bag he was carrying. He admitted to stealing the items.

Asked whether he had anything to say, Mello said: “I regret doing it, but I have nothing to add.”

“Why would you steal shirts?” the District “A” Magistrate asked.

“I don’t know,” a fidgety Mello answered.

Mello, who is booked to leave the island on July 5, was ordered to pay $500 forthwith or face the alternative of three months imprisonment.

It was not immediately clear if the fine was paid.

Justice was not served here, if this was a bajan doing this in America there is no great chance of a similar judgement .#GetVex If this man were a local depending on which class he came from ..he was not going to see this leniency either !

you see how gently they ask him why he stole, i can bet they care nothing of ppl who steal food because things are difficult, theft is theft, then ppl will blame the white man for all the atrocities of black ppl when we do it to ourselves

Well I like this, a white man face here for a change for the pettiest theft but he ain’t get the full weight of the law but if it was anyone else they would have gone to dodds or to the crazy house for evaluation. I’m not racist either.

@Anna Bovell!!!!! what byou are offering up here is Vengance, because in true Bajan ANTI WHITE Stance, you are being Very MYOPIC.
The Man is NOT a Bajan, he has admitted to the Crime of “Theft”, soi!!!! Convict him, fine him Forthwith, and order him DEPORTED on the day that he is Scheduled to Leave Barbados. I know that you and many others are going to Pull out the RACE Cards, but if you take off your Blinkers, and start to think you will hopefully Understand, putting him in Dodds will COST us a lot more than the Fine for this Level of Crime, fines are NOT on the whim and fancy of the Magistrates, they are Pre detirmined, do you realised how much it cost us to keep people in Dodds ???
50 years Later, and we still don’t seem to have any confidence in our Colour, WHY ???

This is a Classic reason for using Biometrics PROPERLY, and NOT the Way that Freundel and his Merry Gang of FOOLS wanted to use it, This Man Has a Biometric Passport, how do i know, the USA does NO LONGER accept Analog Passports at any of it’s Airports, and The New Passports are Scanned on exit and Entry, to mke sure that you are who you say you are.
Now!!! If we had that system in Place, and this guy was put into the Database, if he ever returned to Barbados, a scan would show his theft conviction and he could then be LEGALLY refused Permission to Visit.
BTW: You may not know, but anyone/everyone leaving Barbados for the USA, on an AMERICAN Carrier, their Passports are Scanned at GAIA before the can check in to Board the Aircraft, and the same is done in the USA. so it is possible that if we were able to enter this Info (Conviction) inot an International database, he might not even be able to Board a plane again for Barbados.
    Case Over !!!!!

Bajans always seem to let Race Get in the way of Common sense.

@Observer!!!! Here we go again trying to prove why the WHITE Man should have been dealt with more Harshly, by OMITTING Facts from the Example you are giving.

He was not only Deported for stealing the Food, that he did do, but somehow you mysteriously FORGOT to REMEMBER that those 12 years that he spent in Barbados were as an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT, using up our resources, without putting anything into the System. now you want to send a WHITE Man to Dodds to do the Same thing,(Use up Resources)

I am really Saddened, by the State of Race Relations, on my Tiny Caribbean/Atlantic Island.

May the Good Lord find the time to Bless and keep us.

Race is nothing to do with it. The magistrate has to act within the law however light it seems. Also when people get sentenced, the past criminal history is a big factor. A person might be a first-timer on a theft charge and get CRD. Someone else might steal a chocolate but have six prior convictions for theft so they have to get remanded. We don’t always have all the facts.
