Sir Garry to be honoured in July

In honour of the 80th birthday of National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers and Barbados’ 50th year of Independence, the 50th Anniversary of Independence Secretariat, Sir Garry at 80 Committee and Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Cricket Tournament Committee have come together to dedicate next month to the cricketing icon. A series of celebratory events will be held from July 3 to 31.

The Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Cricket Tournament kicks off on July 3 and runs until July 20 with 16 competing teams. Eleven regional teams including Vishnu Hindu Boys, Presentation College and Fatima College of Trinidad and Tobago, Queens College of Guyana and French Verandah St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College compete in Zone A.

The St. Leonard’s Boys School and Christ Church Foundation will compete from Barbados along with the Canadian school Oakville Academy also in Zone A.

The combined teams of Zone B include Dominica and Antigua’s Combined Schools, Queen’s Park Community College of Trinidad and Tobago and the Barbados Cricket League joined by the Hamilton Lashley Development Foundation. Eletra Institute, New Amsterdam School and Christianburg Wismar School from Guyana are also in this zone.

On July 28, Sir Garfield’s birthday, there will be a celebrity cricket match at Kensington Oval with a team that includes Sir Vivian Richards, Ian Bradshaw, Dale Marshall, Shane Jones, Ryan Austin and Brian Lara. Retired cricketers such as Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka, Ravi Shastri of India and former English international Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff have expressed interest in the match.

A gala reception titled an “Evening with Sir Garry” will take place on July 29 at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre at 7p.m. The highlight of the evening will be an interview of Sir Garry by historian and sports journalist Morris Greenidge. Guests will be treated to hors d’oeuvres by award winning chef Michael Hinds along with premium wines and spirits.

An Invitational Golf Tournament will conclude the season of activities on July 31 at the Sandy Lane Golf and Country Club. Commencing at 12:30p.m., all team members will tee off together for their respective rounds for approximately four and a half hours.

A cocktail reception and prize-giving ceremony will be held around 5:45 p.m.
