Perfume thief gets six months
Anthony St Clair Hunte will have to spend the next six-months behind bars, as a result of his latest offence of theft.
Hunte, 56, of Headley Land, Bank Hall, St Michael was found guilty of stealing a perfume belonging to Cave Shepherd’s Duty Free Caribbean, valued at $258.99.
This follows his arrest on June 4th, 2016 after security at the establishment observed him putting a package into a bag and walking out of the store without paying for it.
He was apprehended. However, police say he attempted to replace the item on the shelf while being taken to a room.
“I humbly apologize for this. I haven’t been before this court for a while. I [usually] eat at the Salvation Army because I don’t have anywhere else and I am on welfare, but nothing happened there [recently],” he said, to which Magistrate Douglas Frederick asked: “ Why perfume and not food?. . . not that stealing is right.”
“It was in an effort to provide myself with a meal,” Hunte said.
