Nation reporter dies
Barbados’ media fraternity has lost one of its brightest, young sports reporters.
Nation Newspaper staffer Petra Gooding died last night at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after a brief illness.
Gooding, 31, joined the Nation’s sports desk last year after previously working as a sports journalist with the Barbados Advocate.
The former Combermerian was a familiar and popular face at basically every sporting event in the island and had a particular passion for football and athletics. Her last major assignments were coverage of the National Primary Schools Athletics Championships (NAPSAC), the Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (BSSAC) and this year’sCARIFTA
The diehard Manchester United fan and product of Kendal Hill, Christ Church, was remembered by several of her journalism colleagues today at theBarbados Advocate, the Nation and the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation, as a hardworking, enthusiastic and extremely efficient sports reporter.
In a tribute to her via social media, physical education teacher at her alma mater, Michael Small, who first met her as a second former at Combermere, described Gooding as a highly respectful individual, always passionate about sports and a stickler for detail and accuracy. Condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
