Biker on bail

COURT TODAY BLOCKFor the first time in over four months, Darius Allan Ramsammy will be able to hit the racetrack on his bicycle.

The young cyclist was finally granted bail by Magistrate Douglas Frederick when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court this morning.

Ramsammy, 18, of Belleview Gap, Waterford, St Michael had been on remand at HMP Dodds since November 26, 2015 on the indictable charge of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting serious bodily harm on Allan Stephen on November 16, 2015.

What might have helped his cause was a letter written by the Barbados Cycling Union, which praised Ramsammy’s character and asked the court to express leniency to him and give him a chance to redeem himself.

And while the prosecution had expressed a previous fear that he might have been a flight risk given that he had no status in Barbados, Frederick released him on $10,000 bail.

However, he will have to report to the Immigration Department every Friday before 10 a.m. as part of his bail conditions.

Ramsammy is scheduled to return to court on July 12.
