WICB: Sammy’s comments inappropriate

The bitter divisions in Caribbean cricket were laid bare Sunday as the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) publicly reprimanded captain Darren Sammy just hours after his team’s stunning victory in the World T20 final over England.

It should have been a day of unalloyed joy for the West Indies, with the women’s team winning their Twenty20 final against Australia on the same Eden Gardens ground where the men later downed England by four wickets in a last-over thriller.

But in a post-match interview, Sammy gave vent to months — possibly years — of frustration with the WICB.

West Indies captain Darren Sammy used a post-match interview following the four-wicket win at Eden Gardens to say his team felt "disrespected by our board"
West Indies captain Darren Sammy used a post-match interview following the four-wicket win at Eden Gardens to say his team felt “disrespected by our board”.

In a reference to the lengthy and bitter pay dispute that had put their World Twenty20 participation in doubt, the all-rounder said his team felt “disrespected by our board”.

– ‘No uniforms’ –

“We had a new manager in Rawle Lewis, who has never managed a team before. We had no uniforms, no printing,” said Sammy.

“The trouble he went through to just get us in this uniform. I got to give credit to the entire team here.”

Sammy also had another swipe at the board as he thanked Grenada Prime Minister Keith Mitchell for a good luck message received hours before the final.

“I really want to thank him. He sent a very inspiring message for the team this morning and I’m yet to hear from our own cricket board. “That’s very disappointing,” added the 32-year-old.

Dave Cameron
WICB President Dave Cameron

Several hours later, in a statement curiously headlined “WICB President has high praises for World Twenty20 Organizers”, from the board’s Antigua headquarters, the sting came lower down.

“The President would like to however apologize for what could be deemed inappropriate comments made by the West Indies’ male captain, Darren Sammy in a post-match interview and would like to apologize on behalf of the WICB, to the millions of fans who witnessed (sic).

“The President has pledged to enquire the reason and will have the matter addressed.”

WICB president Dave Cameron had already appeared to take offence at Sammy’s remarks by tweeting: “When is the last time a critic paid one of your bills? Always remember that when you start to give them your energy.”

Last year, Cameron had to apologize after retweeting a comment from a supporter that West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle should be given a “retirement package” after a run of low scores.

When would have been better! You donr treat your National team with scant disregard! Shameful! Sammy is a leader…Cameron should take notes! You think he was just talking for himself? He was representing 15 men that were treated like boys and who he had to motivate to give their best as a unit…He was talking for the coaching staff…do you recall the Simmons debacle? He had to stand up and speak up …that’s what a leader does!!!!!!

MY final say here: Sammy was WRONG for using that forum to air their grievances with the WICB. He sounded like a petulant child who, instead of graciously acknowledging the losing team and simply praising his team for triumphing over adversity, made the decision to blast the WICB at THAT time. I thought he had too much class for something like that. They would have been – and were – given more interview opportunities in the following minutes and hours, when they would have had the opportunity to air any dirty laundry that they saw fit to air in public.

Congrats to both Teams for spectacular performances.

With respects to the President of the WICB. He needs to re-think his statement and approach herein on wards. He also needs to apologize to the entire Caribbean Community for his lack of Leadership and the treatment given to WI T20 male Cricketers for not having gear to play in (shameful), what are you board members being paid for? The Entire Board seems to be breaking the spirit of the players among other things. The WICB needs ‘Sacking’.
In closing, the WICB President should think twice about penalizing Sammy for his honesty because the entire Caribbean Community is who he will have to answer too. ‘Rally around the West Indies’ our motto.

Inappropriate Mr.Cameron??? I beg to disagree!!! I really think that it was rather appropriate that the fans and world should know that our team did not even have uniforms to represent our region on the world stage. It is about time that u and your team take leave of absence…if that team had not won,no one would have really knew what types of adversity they went through collectively.I don’t always support their actions but today I stand tall and put my name on the top of the list of supporters where those submissions were made publicly…I endorse your post match comments holistically Darren Sammy!!!!

The west Indies cricket board has been stealing the money for years.
Theirs hundreds of millions that’s unaccounted for over the decades. That shows Sammy is correct in calling it as it is. That clearly shows that Cameron isn’t a good leader. Before acknowledging the board failures he’s addressing the criticism. If the board hasn’t been supportive, its best to publicly shame them than be helping them cover up incompetence and disrespectful behavior. I don’t know anything about Cameron but as far as I can see he’s clearly not a leader..Resignation please.

I really do not like cricket; guess I did not spend enough time around it. However, I know enough to know that there is always some wrangling with this board and the players and that the board is accused more often than not of showing very little regard for the players. I am also told that West Indies cricketers are lowest paid in the entire cricketing fraternity. It would be good to know the reason for that. Also, too, with a board being so controversial all the time, I think it makes a whole lot of sense to revamp the vested powers of the board and placed final decisions in the hand of an oversight committee. In this way, the bias associated and displayed by persons like Mr. Cameron can easily be dealt with by the powers of an oversight committee, whose main responsibility to bring balance and sound decision-making strategy to controversial issues. >But what the heck do I know.

  33. P. Shabazz April 4, 2016 at 4:59 am

I and a lot of West Indies home and over seas fully give our support to the statement Sammy`s made. He was right to expose the dark seeded minded WICB . In what way was It Inappropriate I put it to one and all of the WICB board members that you are and still behaving like uncle tom lap dog`s. We / West Indies Cricket have been down in the dumps for a long time and it needed something wonderful as this weekend to restore and reunite all the Islands true spirit and pride back. These teams won in spite of the WICB not because of them.

Furthermore, we believe that rather than waste time investigating Sammy’s comments, Mr. Cameron needs to get his lazy arse up and do the job he is paid to do to the best of his ability. We could easily describe Dave Cameron, the head of West Indies Cricket as embattled, inept or lets simply say he is stupid. Sammy stated facts, you have not disputed those facts, so how could you apologized for those comments. Say if they are true or false, you must be a jack ass! After skipper Darren Sammy, it was the turn of premier all-rounder Dwayne Bravo to launch a tirade on his country’s cricket board stating that “even BCCI does more” for them.

“The country’s cricket is not in right hands. We have not got a telephone call from any of the WICB officials or directors. That’s not a good thing. We know that they did not want or believe that we could win this tournament. It was basically us against them. Even the BCCI does more for us,” Bravo told the ‘Star Sports’ in a post-final interview.

He also questioned as to how players like him, Gayle and Russell are being kept out of the West Indies ODI side.

This is a case of Cameron ruling by the stick. When will he realise that old school tactic doesn’t work. Not a word of congratulation to the team, only to the organisers, but is ready to discipline the captain. When I heard Sammy’s speech I recognised a person who is frustrated. Most people would know him as the calm gentleman who believes in unity. He would’ve had to reach his limit to make those pronouncements yesterday. Cameron get up off your dictatorial button and recognise the essence of the issue and do something about it. You can’t be a leader and the be a petty child at the same time, only concerned with the small things. Maybe that’s the extent of your capabilities.

We indians who consider cricket as religion were shocked to know the division between the players and the board . It is pathetic and WICB should be broad minded enough to iron out the issues in order not to make the glorious moments of west indian cricket into gloomy hours. West indies cricketers are fantastic people entertaining the world. They should be well take care of for the sake of world cricket.

  79. Michael April 4, 2016 at 8:38 am

Regardless of how you feel about Mr. Cameron look at the record since he assumed the presidency. Look at the pay structure overall for all cricketers. Then compare it with the greed of this current batch led by Sammy. How much is enough I ask? No matter how you look at Sammy’s comments yesterday were classless. He knows better and should have done better. Great win poor timing. Come on Darren!!!

CARICOM Prime Ministers, please, please, it is time to act and get rid of this inept WICB and Dave Cameron.

Thanks to Darren Sammy for letting the entire Caribbean and cricketing world know what a bunch of morons the people who administer WI cricket are.

WICB president Dave Cameron had already appeared to take offence at Sammy’s remarks by tweeting: “When is the last time a critic paid one of your bills? Always remember that when you start to give them your energy.”

I take note that the source of the above quote states “Dave Cameron APPEARED TO TAKE OFFENCE at Sammy’s remarks by tweeting —- if it is true he is the person who sent the tweet, it shows a CEO who is extremely insecure and lacks proper people management skills.

This CEO Cameron seems very arrogant and thin skin and woefully in talent to be the CEO of any credible organization.

Maybe that is why he is CEO of the WICB an organization laced with incompetent people which leads to the true saying of “birds of a feather stick together”.

To the Prime Ministers of CARICOM, it is time to act. Institute the reforms immediately.

Please do not allow the WICB and Dave Cameron to continue making such esteem Heads of State look like fools. I know there are other pressing political issues on the books, but this one is too embarrassing to the entire region to allow it to continue.

    Thank you.

  88. Ingrid Codrington April 4, 2016 at 9:15 am

  91. Rosemary Parkinson April 4, 2016 at 9:30 am

I understand what Sammy did fully. Sometimes people have to achieve under horrible duress and against many odds for their country…they many times also have tried to make those who could make it so better for them, understand …and under these circumstances sometimes it is best to shame them in their comfort zone so that they wake up and smell the roses. Simply put. Perhaps the WICB should be thankful to be woken up even if under embarrassing circumstanes…maybe this could be a lesson to them…any one of them thought about how shameful it was for our team to be treated with so little respect by their own board? Players would not have to make such remarks if the board was doing its job well. Does not take a rocket scientist.

  92. David April 4, 2016 at 9:39 am

Quote: “The President would like to however apologize for what could be deemed inappropriate comments made by the West Indies’ male captain, Darren Sammy in a post-match interview and would like to apologize on behalf of the WICB, to the millions of fans who witnessed (sic).

We the people of the West Indies would like to APOLOGISE to Darren Sammy and our WINDIES Team for the continued harassment by an openly inept WICB led by this excuse for a human being in public life.

Come down off that high horse, Mr Cameron. Has it occurred to you that the very players and managers that you constantly sanction are the ones that have shown strength of character and discipline to bring us to this point?

So maybe you don’t have the level of finances that other teams have, but if you continue to treat our athletes so, how will sponsors feel about standing with you? How will fans, thirsting for good competition feel about spending their money that supports your board? It won’t be a lack of patriotism that drives either away!

The players, fans and potential sponsors deserve much better and the fact is that West Indies are likely to become the pariahs off the cricketing world, not because of a lack of talent but because of the explosive instability of our organisers. Who’s really surprised when players seek better deals?

Is it at all possible that the WICB isn’t quite on the ball?

They need to realize that our cricket is not based on them and they do not hold our love, dedication and passion of the game in their hands. Sammy speaking out was out of pure passion and you could have heard it in his voice, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and the chairman is too disrespectful for calling Sammy speech inapropiate as if Sammy and the team should just sit back and be worked and treated like slaves. Ironically that at this worst stage in our history that we can achieve so much! I guess that’s what adversity does eh? I will go further and petition those Regional Boards that elected them into office, to vacate office because it starts from there! Get rid of their support base and our problem will be solved! Start the petition! I will be the first to sign. It is Dave Cameron and his team who are inappropriate. Players are not totally blameless but it is mostly the WICB which has brought us to this point. The players have shown that they still wish to represent us. Away with this Army of Occupation! The players have hit the ball out of the Kolkata stands and into the board’s court (or field). The players won this cup in spite of you not because of you. What part of resign don’t you understand?

  109. Donna Harewood April 4, 2016 at 11:11 am

The Caribbean fans want Cameron and his ilk to go but they don’t care what we want. They are interested in themselves only. Yet they demand more from the players than they ask of themselves.

If they weren’t just interested in their own rewards they would have cussed us and gone long time! Why would they cling to their positions for such an ungrateful lot of people. PERSONAL GAIN that’s why! Hypocrites!

  110. David Garcia (Trinidad) April 4, 2016 at 11:21 am

Inappropriate???? I find your comments inappropriate Mr Cameron. Apologise for nothing to the world,it is time the world knows how unprofessional you and your board operates. It is quite clear that the WICB (WICKED,INCONSIDERATE,CRICKET BOSSES)
never gave this team a ghost of a chance.
The Windies are the best T20 players in the world and this is the treatment meted out to them? The players (both men & women) seemed to have bonded together and became more focused on the task in spite of all the adversity.
For Darren Sammy I have maximum respect and I saw the frustration which must have built up over the years. These three trophies in the space of roughly 4 months have very little to do with the board but should be accredited to the players and one Allen Stanford who brought T20 to the Caribbean. We are the true pioneers of this game. Our players are in every T 20 final all over the world.
Last and not least Mr Cameron …..our teams will not do well in test and 1 day cricket if our best players are not picked and also if the board continues to victimize them.
Darren Sammy you are a Champion! Dave Cameron you sir, are not and the faster you resign along with the rest of your cohorts the better for West Indian cricket.

It is time for the heads of Caricom to call for his head to roll and if they don’t then we the West Indies fans will lobby against him and his yes men board and it will not only those in the caribbean but world wide. How much more stupid is he going to be because he has an inflated ego that because he is in charge he can do whatever he wants. I will never forget as a boy when the board banned all those great players for life that went to South Africa to try and make a better living for themselves and families. The thing is , the rest of the world players also went to South Africa, but didn’t suffer the same fate. The arrogance of the WICB is long and shameful . For years now this board has acted with this dictatorial attitude.
Each and every time that a player shows up the board,s inadequacies,Sanctions against them seems to be the order of the day.eg. chris Gayle,Dwayne bravo and others, and now Sammy. They successfully ran a promising player away from the game.(Keiron Powell.).Poor management who thinks that to tell is better than to solicit imput before making the mistakes that they do. The i tell you attitude of the west indies board died many years ago.Do as i say or else.
I have spent many years working for companies who tend to get employee imput before making major decisions that may impact on them.
Mr Cameron, you and your staff should go.West indies cricket will live without you.

Mr Cameron would do well to take exit left off of the West Indies cricket stage…your tenure to say the least has been dismal and you should find no solace in the recent performance of the men’s team… We await your gracious departure or we will be forced kick you over the line

As a West Indian born in Barbados and now living in Canada I got up at 5.30 am to watch the ladies T20 final and then the men T20 final and enjoyed both wins , however I was very sad to hear from Sammy that the team did not have uniforms to play in this tournament . The question is this , how can the WICB send a team half way across the world to represent us and the team don’t have uniforms? Furthermore the WICB president did not even send any word of encouragement before the final game. How disappointing.

The WICB in its present format has to be reorganized. There has been many reports outlining how this reorganizing should be done
but none has achieve the desired result, therefore I am giving the powers that be(i.e Caricom Leadres) the way forward.

Inform the ICC that all cricket stadiums will be withheld from the WICB staging any form of cricket in the west Indies , but the west indies will continue to play in all countries except in the West Indies
in other words the ICC will stage the games for us and I am sure that Dave Cameron and his co -horts will have no choice but to leave.

in the light of mr. Cameron’s remarks I think the best thing for you to do is to resign West Indies cricket Board needs to dissolve your interest is not with the team and the people of the West Indies

The entire WI Cricket Board should just resign….YES GET RID OF THE ENTIRE BOARD….WASTE OF TIME !

Our players are paid less because we cannot demand the TV revenue due to our poor performances. India, Australia and England take the lion share of tv rights. That said it is well known the WICB are completely out of touch and as a body who hold the sway in the strategic direction of Caribbean cricket they are truly inadequate. Some will say the fact that 3 teams are WORLD CHAMPIONS surely indicate the WICB have got something right.
NOOOOOO this is purely down to the commitment dedication and pride of the players, management and supporting staff. WICB and Cameraase should bend down and let Braithwaite lek dem tail fi six out of the discussion One word RESIGN and GALOONG

Why inappropriate? How is the truth inappropriate???
Just an abuse of “power” by reprimanding Sammy. An amazing captain and team to pull off that win in all the adversity. Why shouldn’t the world know… No offence but Cameron and your team, y’all get name and shame and now want to act out. Should have thought about the consequences for your poor actions!

Small talk by the WICB President its time for a lot of soul searching on his part and the other board members. Embarrassment personified.

  162. Faith April 5, 2016 at 10:56 pm

It’s time for the WICB to be held accountable for their actions. All heads of governments in the Caribbean have to come down on these guys who are holding their breath and drawing pay. They are distroying a beautiful legacy.

Dave Cameron l humbly submit that it’s time for some introspection. What have you added to West Indies cricket during your tenure at the elm? What have you done to fan people’ s love for the game in the region? How have you helped to bridge the egap between players and board? Truth be told your legacy will be that you are an egotistical leader whose aloofness and eindifference towards the players and their wellbeing created and almost impenetrable wedge between the board and players. Do the honorable thing and let someone who is passionate about the game and about the players assume the reigns of power. This rimpasse needs to end and clearly you lack both the interest and rinclination to do this. Time for you to go.
