Bajans in Brussels safe

Members of Barbados’ diplomatic delegation in Brussels were not hurt in today’s terrorist attacks, which killed at least 31 people and left many more seriously injured.

Barbadians were today assured that Ambassador Samuel Chandler and his staff were safe following the bomb attacks at Brussels International Airport and a city metro station.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Maxine McClean told reporters this morning on the sidelines of the 6th round of Caribbean-China Consultations at Hilton Barbados Resort, that she spoke to the staff and “everybody is ok”.

The Barbados embassy in Belgium has a staff of two, comprising a First Secretary and an Attache.

It was not immediately clear if there were other Barbadians living or working in the Belgian capital.

Belgium has now raised its terrorism threat to its highest level.

The attacks came four days after Salah Abdeslam, the main fugitive in the Paris attacks, was seized in Brussels.

The group calling itself Islamic State has claimed responsibility for today’s bombings. (EJ)
