Gittens caught by surprise
Andre McDonald Gittens dashed into his yard and pulled up some marijuana plants when he realized police were executing a search warrant at his home early yesterday morning.
When he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court today, he admitted to Magistrate Douglas Frederick that he uses marijuana but before he does so, he throws the seeds outside. He said he had no idea that “dey would germinate”.
What the magistrate found strange was that once lawmen arrived, Gittens only pulled up marijuana plants “but not devil grass”.
Gittens, 36, of Green Park Lane, St Michael, pleaded guilty to possession and cultivation of 20 cannabis plants. He told police at the time that “is some lil’ marijuana plants I had in de yard to help wid de youts”.
Gittens was fined $750 for possession. The fine is payable in one week with an alternative of a month in jail. He was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the cultivation count.
