Sensational Samuel claims second Gold Cup

by Kent Layne

Jalon Samuels easing to victory in yesterday;s Gold Cup

Dorsett with jockey Jalon Samuel astride, won the $214 000 34th edition of the Sandy Lane Gold Cup yesterday in front one of the biggest crowds seen in years. It was estimated to be at 2000.

Dorsett, imported only on Tuesday and owned by Trinidadian Allan Madoo, was obtained to represent Barbados and will be based and racing in the island from here onward.

Trainer, Robert Pierce, celebrated his third win in the Gold Cup after Sharp Impact in 2006 and Daylight Express in 2009. For Madoo, it was his first victory in the race. It was Samuel’s second Gold Cup title, having also won in 2012 with Dancing David.

When the gates opened it was the USA mount War Envoy with America’s all-time top ten winning jockey Mario Pino in the saddle, followed by Ken Ramsey’s Watchyourownbobber, and the Victor Cheeseman-trained Just A Fashion on the outside. Down the straight for the first time, Just A Fashion took over as they went around the paddock bend, but War Envoy chased well going over the hill and picked up the lead.

Two furlongs out and Jalon Samuel set Dorsett down for the drive in between Just A Fashion and a fast finishing Watchyourownbobber with Patrick Husbands astride. As they turned for home, Dorsett went to the lead and never looked back getting home clear from Watchyourownbobber. War Envoy finished third with last year’s winner Sayler’s Creek fourth. Dorsett stopped the clock in 149.2.

Trainer Victor Cheeseman enjoyed a day he will never forget, winning five races and two of the three stakes races on the card. He opened the day with Hallie Rose in race one, with Jockey Antonio Whitehall. He continued his streak in race three, the Bajan Blue Restaurant Trophy with Northern Star and jockey Antonio Bishop. In race four, the Spa Sprint Trophy which is the sprinting supremacy event of Barbados, Cheeseman returned with Imsogroovy and jockey Samuel.

In race five, the lengthy 11 furlong race, Cheeseman sent out Super Lady and apprentice Rasheed Hughes to make it his fourth win of the day. In race six, the Tanglewood Stakes and Trophy, Patrick Husbands was a late call rider for the injured Kyle Carter. Sirius Black made all the running, giving Cheeseman his fifth win of the day and his third win in the history of that race, after winning previously with Secret Prince in 2004 and Aston Martin in 2013.

It was a day marred by spills. In race 3, jockey Dario Dalrymple fell from Guest Again, but walked away unscathed to return later in the day. However, in the Spa Sprint Stakes and Trophy, jockey Anderson Trotman fell from Dazzling David and Kyle Carter from hot favourite Shared Adventure, and had to be taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Jockey Ricky Walcott also took a tumble from Wild Cat Tea, but walked away unharmed.

Superfecta for the Gold Cup paid $225.70. Samuel was the most successful rider of the day. He was the only rider to have a double. He took two of the three Stakes on the card, winning the Spa Sprint with Imsogroovy and the Gold Cup on Dorsett. It was the second time he had done this as he did it in 2012 when he won the Spa Sprint with Areutalkintome and the Gold Cup with Dancing David.
