Tasker new head of BGA

New president of the Barbados Golf Association Trevor Tasker

Golf in Barbados has new leadership.

Marketing Executive Trevor Tasker has been elected the new president of the Barbados Golf Association, following their 2016 Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the conference room of the Barbados Olympic Association .

Managing Director of Banks Breweries, Richard Cozier was also elected vice-president at last Thursday’s AGM, which witnessed a popular showing of support for the new leaders as both were elected unopposed to serve for the next two years.

Tasker replaces former Esso Executive Cally Boyea, who did not seek re-election, but will serve as Immediate Past-President, while Cozier replaces Barbados captain James Johnson, who also opted to stand down .

The 47th annual AGM of the BGA also saw the return of long-serving Secretary Trenton Weekes and Treasurer David Estwick, while Denis Foster and Julian King were elected as ordinary council members.

Tasker, a regular golfer on the local circuit, lauded the outgoing president and his team for their good work on behalf of the association and also thanked those who expressed their confidence in the new team to lead the organisation over the next two years.

Members of the new Executive Committee of the Barbados Golf Association are – from left – Denis Foster (floor member), Richard Cozier (Vice President), David Estwick (Treasurer), Trevor Tasker (President), Cally Boyea (immediate past president), Trenton Weekes (Secretary) and Julian King (floor member).

In his report to the membership, Boyea, among several other things, said the BGA was able to successfully stage 10 tournaments over the past year and also raise the level of junior golf which saw young players – Xzavier Wiggins, Iz Hustler, Alyssa Inniss-Gittens and Emily Odwin – emerging as serious contenders against the more experienced players.

Tasker said there was plenty of work ahead of the BGA in the coming year, particularly with the staging of the Caribbean Junior Championships in Barbados, and expressed the view that he was also fortunate to have the support of experienced and competent members elected to the Executive Committee.

Some of the elements of the new President’s vision for the sport include building stronger partnerships with clubs and corporate Barbados, improving the efficiency of the BGA for the benefit of its members, and the strengthening of junior development programmes for young golfers.

I look forward to serving you with honour and to working with the new committee, and our general membership, for the further development of golf in Barbados,” he said. (BB/PR).
