Everybody is going dance-Ish

“Ah gine kill yuh wid de ish ish ish . . . !”

Dancers doing the ish-dance.
Dancers doing the ish-dance.

Whether one likes it or not, one has to admit having sung those infectious lyrics from the Ish song at least once since it was dropped by Mole & Lady Essence some months ago.

This song has taken Barbados by storm; and you must know that with it comes a dance. All across Barbados now, the new dance craze is the Ish. On every corner, at every dance, in every fete, and of recent at school sports day, you can find people doing the dance –– in some cases, others simply trying.

Many young men all over Barbados can be seen doing the Ish anywhere, any time.

If you don’t know how to do this now very popular dance, you will feel quite left out. I myself have tried to learn it from younger family members –– to no avail.
It seems as though this catchy dance may just be for the “young people”.

Mole & Lady Essence told Bajan Vibes just how they came up with this now very popular song.

“One day, I was home, and Mole called me and said, ‘Essence, we have a hit out there already; but it’s time to make another one’. So I went over to his house and we were listening to some rhythms and so on. We came up with some that we had to rip up because we weren’t feeling it that much.

“Then, we listened to one particular one called the Festa Scant, and we got a vibe from it; and that’s how Ish came about,” Essence explained.

She said from the time the song dropped they knew it was going to be a hit.

“We knew the song was doing well. People would call my phone and would say, ‘Essence you listening to the radio? The song playing on two stations one time’. The deejays pushed it well for us; and they even called us requesting dub plates and so on, “she added.

Mole & Lady Essence said it was great watching the song take off and seeing persons from all over Barbados doing the dance and posting on social media, some even deeming themselves to be “Ish-kings”.

“From the time we drop the song, we dropped it with the music video. So who didn’t know what was the Ish, learnt it. Females who didn’t know how to bubble,
learnt how to.

“A lot of people then would listen to the song and do their own videos and posted them to Facebook and Instagram, all over social media. That’s how we know the song went big,” Essence said.

Mole further explained: “The sky is the limit for this song. This is the biggest song we have done so far, and it’s getting a lot of credit. The young, the old, the middle-aged –– everyone loves this song, so we know we are doing good things. The hard work is paying off.”

And, in the words of the young ones, Ish has indeed gone global. Mole said many overseas deejays had been contacting him about the song.

“The song is getting good feedback here and overseas –– especially in New York.  I’ve been getting a lot of contacts from deejays telling me they want it on dub plates and so on. A deejay was even telling me he is looking to host an All Star show later this year and he is looking to bring us up. Hopefully, things work out and we get to go.” Mole said.

While still enjoying the success of this song, the duo are not relaxing one bit and have already prepared for Crop Over.

“Before we go into Crop Over, we have a new song called Bruk Back that will be for the girls. And as for Crop Over, we have big things planned,” Lady Essence said.

And as for Mole, he is hoping to have hits for Crop Over, 2016.

“For Crop Over I have nuff songs put down and, hopefully, I can get a hit or two out of the ones I have written so far. Big things coming for sure,” Mole said.

Love when the youth are getting into something positive. I also love the artist responses, they were very well spoken with no bajan slang.

      “drop a song” is slang.
Or are you referring to the fact that they did not speak Bajan dialect?

If I’m speaking in an interview in my native country, there is nothing wrong with me speaking in Bajan dialect. I can use the Queen’s English as well as Bajan.

Cause if I’m interviewed overseas as an artiste the first thing they ask me to do is speak Bajan dialect.
