BCC says goodbye to former principal

The mood was sombre at the Barbados Community College (BCC) today where the body of former long serving principal Norma Holder lay in state.

Classes were cancelled as family, friends, colleagues and past and present students gathered at the Liberal Arts Auditorium to quietly pay their respect.

Holder’s husband of 54 years Jean Holder and their daughters Janet and Caroline greeted those who offered comforting words.

Holder,79, died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Sunday, February 14 after a brief illness.

Some of the prominent officials who passed through included former Permanent Secretary Fozlo Brewster, former Principal of The Alexandra School Ada Straughn and Reverend Ivan Harewood among other distinguished Barbadians.

BCC’s community was represented by former Principal Dr Gladstone Best, recently appointed Principal Dr Ivan Austin, Deputy Principal Stephen Broome, Acting Registrar Roger Worrell and Chairman of the Board of Management Stephen Broome.

Musicians Romari Welch, Andre Woodvine, Andre Daniel, Richard Evans, Eric Cobham, Maiella Best, Fernando Watts, David Weatherhead and Melanie Hinds serenaded the reflective audience.

Canon Noel Burke offered opening and closing prayers.

Holder’s funeral takes place at 3 p.m. tomorrow at St George Parish Church where she was the organist.
