Teen jailed for three months

COURT TODAY BLOCKMagistrate Douglas Frederick yesterday imposed a three-month prison sentence on Davied Javon Cumberbatch after he admitted having an offensive weapon on him on February 6.

The sentence, however, was suspended for six months.

Cumberbatch also pleaded guilty to possession of a small amount of cannabis on that same date; he was convicted, reprimanded and discharged on that count.

The District ‘A’ Magistrates Court heard that police were patrolling Hardwood Alley, The City close to 4 p.m. when they saw the teenager walking along the street smoking what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette.

Police approached Cumberbatch and asked him what he was smoking. “Just a lil’ weed and Fanta,” he replied.

The officers took the cigarette from the 18-year-old and after conducting a search, they found a loose quantity of cannabis and a scissors in his haversack.

When he was asked to account for the weapon, Cumberbatch said that whenever he “comes to town, a lot of people want to do me something,” so he had the scissors for his protection.
