Habitual thief pleads guilty
For stealing two perfumes from Cave Shepherd on Saturday afternoon, Dwayne Elmore Cumberbatch was sentenced today to nine months imprisonment at HMP Dodds.
The 29-year-old habitual thief, of no fixed place of abode, appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffie-Sargeant in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court to answer related charges. He pleaded guilty.
The court heard that Cumberbatch entered the store via the Victoria Street entrance around 4 p.m., made his way to the perfume section, grabbed two perfumes from a shelf, and dashed from the building.
Security, which was monitoring Cumberbatch’s movements, pursued him and he was caught a short time afterwards near the Immigration Department on Wharf Road.
He was brought back to the store and searched. The two perfumes, were worth $467.98.
Just a few weeks ago, on January 8, Cumberbatch stood in the same court before acting Magistrate Alliston Seale and confessed to stealing items from Savings Plus. For that offence, he was fined $300 payable in four weeks with an alternative of three months behind bars.
Should Cumberbatch fail to pay this fine within the next two weeks, that three-month sentence will kick in. It will run concurrently with the sentence he received today.
Cumberbatch has several prior convictions for theft.
