Unemployment falls slightly
There was a slight decline in the unemployment rate here in the third quarter of 2015 when compared with the second quarter, with the number of Barbadians unable to find work falling from 11.9 per cent to 11.3 per cent.
The latest figures released by the Ministry of Economic Affairs revealed that during the third quarter of 2015 the number of people employed stood at 128,400, while 16,300 people were unable to find work. However, 77,400 people had stopped looking and had been removed from the labour force, according to a release from the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS), which quoted figures from the Barbados Statistical Service’s Continuous Household Labour Force Survey.
The overall fall in unemployment coincided with a drop in the number jobless women. While unemployment among men remained steady at 12.8 per cent, the jobless rate among women fell from 11.1 per cent to 9.7 per cent.
According to the BGIS release, the Wholesale and Retail Trade sector generated the largest number of jobs, employing 20,300 persons, while the Accommodation and Food Services Sector employed 15,300 persons.
Construction, Mining and Quarrying; Public Administration and Defence, as well as Manufacturing, all hired well over 10,000 people during the period. (BGIS/MM)
