‘On a previous occasion, he declared that he was hearing voices in his head.
“I hearing voices in my head. I think wunna want to kill me so kill me now and done,” Ryan Clairmonte Benn told Magistrate Douglas Frederick when he entered the dock earlier this year charged with wilfully damaging three houses and two cars belonging to two of his relatives by fire, on April 2 this year.
There was later confirmation that Benn, who resides at Brandons Gap, Deacons Road, St Michael, has a mental history, in a report from the Psychiatric Hospital, which also pointed to drug abuse.
When his matter came up again in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today, Benn informed Magistrate Frederick: “Fredericks, uh gine teach yuh something first, that Psalm 14 and Psalm 53 say the same thing, if yuh din know.”
With a copy of the New Testament in hand, Benn then began reading Psalm 51 loudly.
When he was remanded until January 11 next year, the accused ended by saying: “Fredericks, uh tired wid jail man . . . it playing pon muh mind.”
“Well you’re doing the right thing; reading your Bible,” the Magistrate responded.
Benn remains on remand at HMP Dodds on the indictable charges.
