Remanded for beating girlfriend

COURT TODAY BLOCKKhiry Sobers admitted hitting his girlfriend last Friday, although he insisted that he never abused her.

After a matter involving the two went before Magistrate Wanda Blair earlier yesterday, she remanded Sobers until Wednesday, when he returns to court for sentencing.

Sobers, of 1st Avenue, Jackson, St Michael pleaded guilty to inflicting serious bodily harm on Sasha Barrow-Agard on October 9.

The couple met a few months ago and live together. They had an altercation last Friday and according to the police, Sobers beat the complainant from Bridgetown until she got home.

Station Sergeant Carson Henry further told the Holetown Magistrates’ Court that Sobers even sat at the woman’s workplace while she worked and if certain conversations she had with her clients displeased him, he would beat her after they left the hair salon.

Friday’s incident was drawn to the attention of police, after which the woman made a formal complaint.

When Magistrate Wanda Blair asked Sobers if he had anything to say, he explained that he “don’t sit down and guard she.”

He said much of the statement which the police read to the court, was incorrect.

“I don’t understand all this that going on here right now…I even tell she that I done wid dis here and she tell me she ain’t want me to done,” Sobers said.

“Somebody in they right head gine beat a woman straight from home to work? Me and she had it last Friday, yes…me and she did get physical; we both get physical but we even smoke together after that,” Sobers recalled.

“I shoulda gone home though; this is my fault. Women does left men but men does can’t left the woman; this is my fault.”

Sobers also mentioned that one of Agard’s children’s father had threatened to shoot him in the face “but nobody ain’t analyzing dah.”

Magistrate Blair informed Sobers that if he were in fact threatened, he should report the matter to the police and “not take matters into your own hands.”

When the complainant addressed the court, she said that Sobers was well aware that this was not the first instance of physical violence even though he was trying to make the court believe so.

She said that he was possessive and often accused her, as well as hit her at least once weekly based on “assumptions he makes in his own head.”

He sounds charming not. Woman get some self respect and raise the bar. Is this the life you dreamt of as a child? He sounds like a nightmare. Good luck on getting rid of him out of your life.

Seriously though, is time for men to get some self esteem and left out women like that.

    Awright, Watchman! women like that:
women that will allow ‘men’ to hit them and get away with it; women who make excuses for ‘men’ who have no self-control; women who can’t tell when ‘men’ have no respect for them; women who live in constant fear.

You’re right about one thing, Watchman, if he had self esteem, he would know that it does not come from abusing women. Please give them the opportunity to find a real man.

And the raging debate of bias continues the women defending the women and the men backing the men. But the reality of the situation is side thrust, in favor of bias. Today’s so called men and women base their relationships on the premise of sexuality and not compatibility . I always point out to people :If you lie with dogs you will wake up with fleas.

It must be nice to be able to put assumptions into neat little packages @Christopher Alleyne. Speaking for myself and about the reported case, my comments have nothing to do with bias and everything to do with the evidence. Were it a case of abuse by the woman, my opinion would have been that he should get far from her. There are times you lie with dogs and get up with savage bites, maybe learned behaviour from the previous pack. It’s unfortunate that you are not aware of healthy relationships – perhaps it’s time you broadened your circle.
