Phil Simmons suspended

Phil Simmons has been suspended with immediate effect as West Indies coach, two days after he expressed his unhappiness with the ODI squad selected for the Sri Lanka tour.

Simmons was caught unawares by the decision, which was communicated to him in an email from WICB chief executive Michael Muirhead, as he was in the UK preparing to join the squad in London on their way to Sri Lanka.

Simmons will not travel with the team at this time, and former West Indies fast bowler Eldine Baptiste, who is also a national selector, will take up the position of interim coach for the tour of Sri Lanka. The series, which begins on October 14, is the new Test captain Jason Holder’s first assignment.

The action comes on the heels of comments Simmons made in the print and electronic media, which appeared to question the legitimacy of the selection process of the one-day international squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.

As a result, the management of the WICB has taken action to suspend the head coach, pending an investigation into the issue,” the board said in a statement.

“The head coach will not now travel with the team on the tour of Sri Lanka.”

Though the West Indies’ limited-overs squads for the tour had not been announced, Simmons revealed that “interference from outside” at a selection meeting on September 23 had kept all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard out of the ODI side.

Simmons said that he, as coach, and chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd had voted for their inclusion, but were outnumbered 3-2 despite Holder also wanting Bravo and Pollard in the team.

“I think it’s disappointing from the fact that I haven’t got the best 50-over ODI squad that we can select in the Caribbean,” Simmons had said at a media conference, at the conclusion of the West Indies training camp at the 3Ws Oval in Bridgetown.

“The chairman, Mr Lloyd, he came and he gave an exceptional speech saying that he thinks it is time they are back in the squad and he gave exceptional reasons for them being back in the squad. Unfortunately, when we went into the selection [meeting] we lost it 3-2. Him and myself – the captain [Holder] doesn’t have a vote in this – but the captain also gave his views as to why they need to be back.”

Bravo and Pollard have not been considered for ODI selection since they were dropped for the series in South Africa in January this year, and their omission from the World Cup squad generated plenty of debate. At the time Lloyd had said he had spoken to the two players and explained to them that the selection panel wanted to move on and give youngsters more chances.

    who simmons tink he is?
why does he tink dat he should disrespect the vote of three of the selectors
why does he tink dat three of the selctors are not independent of thought and dat only he and lloyd can select a team

Here we go again freedom of spreach murderd.
Is it not time this WICB was removed?
The coach has the right to speak on all subjects,
the trinis and the trainer has become the scapegoats for these jokers again.

Nothing new in dealing with a WICB. I said from day one That Simmons had the toughest job in the world being WI coach. He should have never gave up his job to come to deal with this WI team/WICB as is.Too much politics all over with JA vs T&T.This should tell Mitchell that a change must come about real soon as the way the WICB board is chosen and kept.

    simmonds should be fired

did not walsh and the others selectors have the right to freedom of speech too?-or the freedom to vote against his wishes?

having been out voted by 3 other selectors could he not accept that?
    is he greater than walsh?
he was often himself picked before others not on merit but because he was an ass licker

Mr . Simmonds I could have told you so. The West Indies selectors somehow believe that they are untouchables. West Indies cricket should be for West Indian fans ,not the few that would like to feel that whatsoever they do is Gospel, and no one should be allowed to voice an opinion or question a decision that they might make.
I know the World was once filled with dictators like Sadam , Gadaffi, Papa Doc, Bokassa, Chavez, and Latest being Putin, but to think that a few small minded wantobes are railroading the sport and the Cricketers that the majority wants to see is rediculous.

People talk crap! Phil Simmons has always seems like a cool, calm professional guy. For him to speak out like this speaks volumes!! It says alot about poor management at Wicb that their coach is so distressed that rather than talk to them he talked to the press! When a poorly selected team goes & gets whitewash it will be Simmons fault according to you lot critizing him! Wicb care nothing for Windies cricket.

simmonds head to big for his cap and his feet too big for his boots

this is one time the board is right

in 1974 the windies went to india without sobers kanhai foster and charlie davis—all proven star players

in 92 we went to the world cup without grenidge and richards and dujon

if we could play without the above on these occasions we can play without bavo and pillard now— we not going to the ipl

the trinis dem tink they can do as they like evrywhere

simmonds could say he not happy with the selection but he cant prove that the 3 selectors who voted against him were influenced
    by outside influences
he has insulted the intelligence of 3 other ex players and fellow selctors

  10. Alex Alleyne September 28, 2015 at 8:33 pm

WICB could as well say Simmonds fired and done wid that .

The persistent negative comments by Iswiltshire gives me the impression that he has a personal grudge against the Manager or the name he used is a nom de plume. We have a situation where any expression of free speech is met with punishment if it goes against the status quo.

RE “The persistent negative comments by Iswiltshire gives me the impression that he has a personal grudge against the Manager or the name he used is a nom de plume”
1 CLEARLY THIS IS A NON SEQUITUR , and is a most illogical statement lol
Whereas the WICB is a circus, simmons can not prove that three of his fellow selectors that he is claiming did not have the sense to vote as he and lloyd did were influenced by outside sources

    His outburst was childish lol
Why are my comments negative? Because they differ from yours
Am I not allowed free speech too or am I being influenced by outside sources too

The big issue, its proven, time and time again , west Indians /black people cannot unite and work together to do anything for the future, the behaviour through out the region as per management is sad , its always that cycle keep coming at us, and brings with it failure.

Us west Indians suppose to have produce, some of the world best cricketers , and committees and management is always behaving , like a bunch of wankers. just call it day, scrap the crap.

Here we go again. When when dictatorship to some appear to a fact of life (theirs) revolution seems to be the only recourse.
West Indies cricketing selection comity is moving toward dictatorship, which does not seem to want to recognize anything, or anyone elses input but they own . the ultimate goal seem to be to boost its own ego and desire.
I wonder if a manager or coach of any team sport in any organization has a say or a vote as to a player or players that he believes should be on a rooster or he has to abide by only the hand he’s dealt.
It seem as though Mr. Simmonds was not even afforded the decency of being invited to or being part of the selection.
Anyone given a job to perform that cannot question or ask his boss if an alternative couldn’t work better than the one in place or allowed to make a suggestion without being disciplined is indeed a Dictator.
