Phillip Antoine has proven that he is one of Barbados’ best bartenders. The 29-year-old surpassed four other competitors in the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge which took place last month at Drift Ocean Terrace Lounge in St James.

His innovative cocktails Aromatic Therapy and Plumstyle creatively infused Angostura Aromatic Bitters, along with Angostura White Oak and Angostura 1919 rums to help cinch his win. Antoine will go on to represent Barbados in the regional competition in St Maarten on October 31 and hopefully progress to the global competition in Trinidad in 2016, competing for the title of Angostura Global Ambassador. The eventual winner will not only bear the title of Angostura Global Ambassador for two years, but receive a US$10,000 cash prize.

“It feels great to have finally won,” Antoine said. “It is a dream come true. I always wanted to strive for first place, and I felt like it was finally my time to shine.”

Trained and coached by former Angostura Ambassadors Rohan Hackshaw and Jamaal Bowen, who also hail from Barbados, the employee of South 7 Bar & Restaurant said that his strategy for winning was to simply represent the Angostura brand and to showcase the usage of Angostura rums and bitters. After this, he noted, his mixes “spoke for themselves”.

As Barbados’ Angostura brand ambassador, Antoine will be charged with growing the Angostura brand and ensuring that he promotes all the positive attributes that the brands possess.

Marlon Boysielal, regional sales and marketing manager for Angostura, praised Antoine for taking home the top prize in the local competition.

“Phillip displays all the attributes that the best Barbadian bartenders possess. He’s knowledgeable, approachable, confident and loves Angostura rums. Phillip is a good representative of the Barbados bartending community and will grow as our Barbados brand ambassador to influence the next generation of industry professionals. The Angostura family welcomes Phillip and looks forward to his growth over the next year.”

The Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge has been a regular feature on the international scene for over a decade and is held every two years around the world. The competition seeks to find the best bartenders and best cocktail creations from around the world.
