Tropical Storm Erika forms
A new tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic, just as Caribbean countries were breathing a sigh of relief after Tropical Storm Danny deteriorated without making landfall in the region.
The Miami-based National Hurricane Center tonight announced the formation of Tropical Storm Erika, about 955 miles east of the Leeward Islands.
The first advisory on the storm stated that the Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of Erika, and storm watches may be required for some of the islands on Tuesday.
Erika is moving toward the west near 20 mph with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph with higher gusts. The storm is expected to strengthen in the next couple days.
