Edward Okey’s mom jumps for joy

Harrison College student Edward Okey was among this year’s Barbados Scholarship winners, but anyone near his mother Arit Okey could be forgiven for believing she was the successful one.

Edward said his mother was the happiest woman alive when she received the news of her son’s achievement.

“My mum just started jumping up and down. She was so excited. She started calling everyone that she knew to give them the news,” a laughing Edward told Barbados TODAY this evening in a phone interview, adding that his father Dr Ntui Okey was also excited but much less emotional.

And while the 18-year-old was equally excited to have been awarded a scholarship, the news didn’t come as a complete surprise to the sixth form student.

“When I heard I was ecstatic because to me it is a massive achievement. I am very pleased. But to be honest, it is not a complete surprise because I expected to do well,” said the avid footballer, who revealed he was on his way to play in a match.

Edward, a former student of St Stephen Primary School, received eight Grade 1’s.

In unit one, he scored 1’s in biology, physics, chemistry and communications study. He also aced the second unit, which included biology, physics and chemistry, as well as Caribbean studies.

He will head to the North Eastern University in Boston to study biochemistry.
