Win for Liverpool, Arsenal beaten by West Ham

Liverpool opened their Premier League campaign with a late 1-0 win at Stoke, while Arsenal went down to West Ham in the North London derby on Sunday.

There was little goalmouth action at Stoke until Liverpool’s Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho scored with a ferocious shot from 25 meters in the 86th minute.

Liverpool faced a big game of sorts, taking on a Stoke side that had humiliated the Reds in their final game of last season — inflicting a 6-1 defeat on Brendan Rodgers’ team.

The tables were turned on Sunday by Coutinho’s moment of magic, when the Brazilian unleashed a booming shot that grazed the tips of Jack Butland’s gloves on its way in.

In the earlier game of the day, Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat by West Ham at the Emirates Stadium after a nighmare debut for new goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Cheikhou Kouyate headed West Ham into the lead just two minutes before the break after poor judgment by the former Chelsea ‘keeper, who was then wrong-footed by Mauro Zarate’s shot from outside the area in the 57th minute.

Tipped to be title challengers this season and coming off a 1-0 win over champion Chelsea in the Community Shield, Arsenal failed to create clear chances against a well-organized West Ham defense under new manager Slaven Bilic.

The first round of matches concludes on Monday night, when Manchester City travel to West Bromwich Albion.
