She said patients need to be exposed to recreational activity, and encouraged volunteers to “do whatever they are good at and help the patients” at the Black Rock institution.

“Whether it be a television set, balls they can play with, (or) handcraft, all forms of assistance are welcome,” Deane said.

She noted that at the end of their treatment, patients could use the skills learnt from volunteers to generate income for themselves.

The Black Rock Seventh Day Adventist Church today presented a refurbished golf cart to the mental institution to help hospital staff speedily deliver meals around the 33-acre Government property

Deane said she hoped that gesture from the church would inspire more individuals and community groups to offer support.

“All is in an effort to make people aware of psychiatric illness and how we can work together as a nation to help the persons who are here,” she said. (KK/RT)
