Man U win, Chelsea held to draw

Chelsea’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is shown a red card for his challenge on Bafetimbi Gomis

While Manchester United held on to start their English Premier League season with a  1-0 win over Tottenham, defending champions Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Swansea City.

Kyle Walker’s 22nd minute own goal was enough to give United a winning start, despite a lacklustre performance.

But despite leading twice, 10-man Chelsea were unable to overcome a determined Swansea unit in their opening round encounter.

Oscar’s 23rd minute strike had given Chelsea the lead, but Swansea’s Andre Ayew levelled the score six minutes later.

An own goal by Federico Fernandez in the 30th minute gave Chelsea the lead once again, as they went into the break holding a 2-1 advantage.

But Chelsea’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, was sent off in the 52nd minute for a reckless challenge on Bafetimbi Gomis. Gomis then stepped up to slot home the resulting penalty to ensure a share of the points.

In other results, Aston Villa defeated Bournemouth 1-0, Leicester shocked Sunderland 4-2, Crystal Palace downed Norwich 3-1 and Watford and Everton drew 2-2.
