Relay teams into Pan Am finals

Akela Jones placed sixth in the long jump

Both the women’s 4×400 metre and the men’s 4×100 metre relay teams advanced to today’s finals at the Pan American Games currently taking place in Toronto, Canada.

In yesterday’s semifinals, the female team clocked a season’s best 3:31.72 to finish third in their heat and earn an automatic spot in the finals.

The men then set a new national record of 38.65 to place second in the second semifinal behind Trinidad and Tobago who were timed at 38.52.

Despite jumping a personal best 6.60 metres, Barbadian Akela Jones failed to medal in the women’s long jump

The 20-year-old Jones failed to add to her bronze medal performance in the high jump, placing sixth in last night’s finals.

The event was won by Canada’s Christabel Nettey, who leapt 6.90 metres. Bianca Stuart of the Bahamas placed second with a jump of 6.69, while Sha’Keela Saunders of the USA was third in 6.66 metres.
