thrilling races on the cards for saturday’s event
Poetic Licence and Donicodidit are set to do battle again in the highly anticipated 2014 Massy United Barbados Derby on Saturday.
They ran one-two in the first-leg Barbados Guineas with Poetic Licence winning over Donicodidit in a race where Poetic Licence destroyed the field leading from start to finish. The second leg Pinnacle Feeds Midsummer Classic was much different. Poetic Licence did not have it all her way on the front end as she was quickly joined by Michael Jackson.
She had quickly blown him away coming down the straight run for the first time as jockey Rickey Walcott was trying to restrain her early aggression. Many thought this was what led to her losing the race. Donicodidit had tackled Poetic Licence three furlongs out and never looked back winning handsomely. It now has spoilt the Triple Crown hopes of Poetic Licence.
History shows that horses which have won the Barbados Guineas and lost the Midsummer Classic, have returned and won the Barbados Derby. Examples are Miss Judes 1976, Viking 1981, Don Juan 1987, Zarmella1994, Chutney 1998 and Fresh Milk 2008.
If Poetic Licence wins the Derby she will be among this elite of runners that failed at the Triple Crown and came back and won the Derby.
Trinidad and Tobago entrant Bulletproof has being going well at gallops in Trinidad. However, the Garrison Savannah’s running direction of clockwise could be factor as Trinidad has an anti-clockwise track. His trainer Harry Gobin says he is satisfied with how Bulletproof is working. Bulletproof ran second in the Chief Commander Stakes to Man To Come. The Chief Commander Stakes was created for the first two horses to gain a berth into the Barbados Derby.
However Chief Commander Stakes winner Man
To Come’s connections will not be sending him to Barbados. Bulletproof’s connections have taken up the invitation to
send him and he will be the first horse sinceRenegadein 1993 to run in the Barbados Derby. Kimafoutiesa is the first and only Trinidad horse to win the Barbados Derby, doing so in 1988.
Panamanian jockey Nobel Abrego will have the riding assignment on Bulletproof and is his regular partner. Abrego is no stranger to the Garrison having won the Barbados Derby back in 2010 withLeave It To Me.
My pick is for Poetic Licence to take the Derby over Donicodidit with all others battling for the remaining positions.
Derby day will not be only about the main event. But the co-feature The T. A. “Tommy” Peirce Memorial Trophy promises to be a cracker-jacker with the island’s top rated horses all entered.
Sirus Black who has been only out of the first two once in his last eight starts heads the star-studded list. The Victor Cheeseman colt looks sharp and ready to go. Shared Adventure who is the highest rated horse in Barbados looks sharp and fit. Shared Adventure, rated 130 and Sirus Black, rated 125 –– the two highest rated horses in the race –– will carry the top impost of 128 pounds.
This will be a mouth-watering clash and thousands of fans will be trekking to the Garrison Savannah to see who will come out on top.
In their last two outings Shared Adventure had given Sirus Black weight. In their first clash over 7.8 furlongs Sirus Black was handed as much as 14 pounds by Shared Adventure with the former coming out on top.
During their last clash at the shorter five and a half trip, Sirus Black came out on top again when also handed weight by Shared Adventure. Other useful horses entered are Just A Fashion which placed third behind Sirus Black and Shared Adventure early in the year. Also in the mix is Indiano Jones who ran down Sirus Black earlier in the year only to get the race via disqualification.
Post time for Saturday’s Derby day is 12:30 p.m.
