Guyana – ‘Nervous’ bandit shoots partner
GEORGETOWN –– Police are on the hunt for a “nervous” bandit who accidentally shot his own partner during a robbery at M. Ali & Sons Supermarket at Main Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Reports are that the bandit wounded his accomplice at around 7 a.m. yesterday while trying to shoot a female employee who had entered the store while the heist was in progress.
But the shooter and his wounded partner managed to escape in a car with some $500,000, a firearm and several phone cards. Police were said to be tracking the men.
A son of the victims told Kaieteur News that his mother Nazmoon Ali and his 14-year-old daughter were at the back of the store, when two men, who had firearms, entered and held them at gunpoint. Several other female workers were in the store at the time.
They relieved the women of money, phone cards and took a licensed firearm. However, while the robbery was still in progress, another female employee entered the store and saw the men. On seeing the employee, one of the robbers attempted to shoot the woman, but shot his accomplice instead.
Despite being hit, the wounded man managed to escape to a waiting car with his partner. Police have reportedly identified the vehicle and were said to be on the men’s trail.
The owners of M. Ali & Sons also operate a filling station, and bandits have targeted the family several times.
Last August, businessman Mohamed Ali was robbed at gunpoint of $2.5 million that he was about to deposit in a New Amsterdam bank.
The robber was caught after diving into a swamp to elude police and public-spirited citizens.
