Three chosen for sailing programme
Barbados is participating in the 2015 International Sailing Federation Youth Sailing World Championship Emerging Nations Programme.
Through the Barbados Sailing Association, Barbados is one of the few selected countries to attend the Regional Performance Clinic being held at the National Sailing Academy in Antigua from today to July 21.
Youth sailors Scott Gittens and Alec Drayton, along with coach Kwame Hinds, will attend the seven-day long regional clinic, featuring an intense practical and theoretical programme culminating in a two-day regatta.
The Emerging Nations Programme will better prepare young sailors as they build up to the 2015 ISAF Youth Worlds set to be held in Langkawi, Malaysia from December 27, 2015, to January 3, 2016.
Seventeen-year-old Gittens recently competed in the Canadian Laser Championships and will be representing Barbados at the Laser Youth Worlds in Canada in August and the ISAF Youth World Championships in Malaysia in December.
Gittens is one of the young sailors that have been accepted to receive an ENP Scholarship from ISAF for travel costs, registration fees and boat charter related to the Youth Worlds in Malaysia.
The Youth Worlds Emerging Nations Programme will give the coaches and sailors a greater chance to build knowledge and further develop national training schemes in their home countries to benefit future generations.
