St Michael home destroyed by fire

In light of an early morning fire that destroyed a two-bedroom wooden house in The City, a parliamentarian is calling on Barbadians to ensure their properties are insured.

Three fire tenders responded to the blaze at the house that was unoccupied at the time around 5:30 a.m. in the densely populated Fitts Gap, Westbury Road, St Michael.

Speaker of the House of Assembly Michael Carrington who indicated he was happy no lives were lost, and that the fire did not destroy other structures, said it was time home-owners in densely populated areas consider acquiring home insurance.

“I keep saying that we have a problem in these areas where the houses are too close. I understand that housing insurance is fairly reasonably when it comes to these type of places. I just want to encourage people to ensure that their properties are ensured.”

Meanwhile, eyewitness Fitzgerald Moore said after smelling the smoke, he immediately rushed for the hose and started wetting the engulfed house before the fire tenders responded.
