Patsy Springer passes away

Former parliamentary representative for St Michael South East, Patsy Springer is dead.
Springer, who is said to have been in his mid-eighties at the time of his death, won the seat on a Democratic Labour Party (DLP) ticket.
He represented St Michael South East for one term from 1971 to 1976 when Barbados adopted single member constituencies.
After quitting elective politics, he became a very popular and effective speaker on DLP platforms. He was also a popular race horse owner.
Springer also managed the once controversial West Indian Hospital Sweepstakes before it went out of business.
He is survived by his sister, Ermie Springer and brothers Harry and Michael Springer.

It would sound much nicer if you said “has died” rather than ” is dead “

Loved his political delivery on the platform…slow, deliberate and biting. Heard him back in the late 1980s or early 90s in the Ivy say: “n..e…v..u…h in the h…i…s…t….o…r…y of B..a…r….b…a..d..i..a..n p…o…l…i…t..i…c…s has one man p…r..o…m…i..s…e so much, for so long, to so many, and d..e..l..i..v..e…r…e..d so little to so few. He was putting some licks in Richie Haynes who by then had left the DLP. A very pleasant soul who I had the chance to speak to on a few occasions. A solid citizen. Condolences to his family.

Tony, I am so with you on this. This insularity that we are practicing in Barbados is so nasty and ugly, it sickens. It is as if the only way we can make any headway in discussion is to denigrate. It is indeed the lowest we have gotten in this country.
THIS IS NOT what ERROL WALTON BARROW worked so hard to do for us. Its insulting and it diminishes and these culprits need to back out of public discussion.
This is not how bajans of the real kind behave.
Mr. Patsy Springer was an admired politician. A man who understood the man in the street and responded very well to him. His many accents in Parliament were in the interests of the small man and to that extent, he did us proud.
He endured much personal loss and stood tall each time even though many of us knew the pain. I recalled when Jimmy died tragically and we assembled to be demonstrative in our sympathy; he came, spoke, invited us to a bite and gave a very enlightening perspective on his loss.
May he rest in peace. Onward soldier. Barbados is better because you were here.
