Top seeds advance despite one upset
It was smooth sailing for all but one of the top seeds as the 2015 National Masters Squash Championships continued at the Barbados Squash Club on day two of the competition.
In the quarterfinals of the Men’s Over-40, the effervescent Leon Truss was downed by 5/8 seed Terry Millar 11-8, 11-2, 11-9, while top seeds Mark Gilkes, Mark Sealy and Don Benn all comfortably advanced to the final four with straight game victories over Sylvester Nurse, Deepu Panjwani and Peter Harris respectively.
Gilkes, the number one seed, easily disposed of Nurse 11-3, 11-5, 12-10, while Sealy made light work of the much improved Panjwani 11-5, 11-4, 11-2. Benn was the final player to book his place in the semi-finals with an 11-4, 12-10, 11-8 victory over Harris.
In the lone quarterfinal of the Men’s Over-40 Plate, Brian Lowe won a marathon encounter with Preston Parris 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 8-11, 13-11.
In the main draw of the Men’s Over-50 category, the final four have also been decided.
Top seed Edwin Wickham advanced without a point being played against Andrew Nunes, while Craig Archer, the number two seed, defeated Frank Jordan 11-7, 11-9, 11-8.
Dean Straker and Cliff Nolan, both 3/4 seeds, also advanced in contrasting styles, with Straker recording a comfortable straight game victory over David Spink 11-3, 13-11, 11-8, while Nolan had to save three match balls in the fourth game against Michael Best to eventually win 11-2, 8-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-4.
In the Men’s Over-60 category, top seed Errol Pilgrim defeated Monty Cumberbatch 11-7, 11-2, 11-5 in the lone match played in the second round.
Among the Over-40 ladies, top seed Andrea Goodridge recorded two victories in round-robin play, first over number two seed Lynn De Cambra-Mcleod 11-6, 11-7, 11-5, then over Lucyla Seale 11-6, 11-9, 12-10. De Cambra-Mcleod returned to beat Jo Haywood 11-5, 11-7, 11-5.
