Windies’ series

Matthews puts a wrap on Sri Lanka

An inspired all-round performance by Hayley Matthews helped West Indies women wrap up the three-match T20 series 2-1, after they had lost the first game. Matthews’ 4 for 10 helped restrict Sri Lanka to 74, before she scored an unbeaten 32 to ensure a nine-wicket win in the series decider in Colombo today.

Sri Lanka struggled from the start, losing wickets at regular intervals. Anisa Mohammed started the slide with two wickets in consecutive balls in the second over. First she had Yasoda Mendis stumped by captain Merissa Aguilleira for 1 and the opener was followed by wicketkeeper Dilani Surangika who was also stumped by Aguilleira without scoring to leave the hosts at 6 for 2 wickets.

Wickets continued to tumble and with the score on 20 in the sixth over Matthews made her first impact on the game when she had Nipuni Hansika caught by Stacy-Ann King for 1. Matthews would strike soon afterwards when she smartly caught and bowled Shashikala Siriwardene for 2. Matthews then snared the important wicket of Eshani Kaushalya who has been a thorn in their side during the tour. She was caught by Tremayne Smartt for 2.

Hayley Matthews made a brisk 24 and then snared 3-for-7 with her off breaks.

Hayley Matthews turned in an excellent all-round performance.

The Barbadian teenager’s dismantling of the middle-order continued when she had the wicket of Sripali Weerakkody for 1, also stumped by Aguilleira who kept wicket outstandingly. All the while the only batter who seemed able to contend with the West Indies spin attack was opener Chamari Atapattu Jayangani who top-scored with 43. She was eventually the seventh wicket to fall and struck six boundaries in her innings. Chathurani Gunawardene with 10 was the only other batter to reach double figures.

In the chase, West Indies lost only one wicket as they hunted down the target of 75 with 52 balls to spare. Stafanie Taylor and Matthews put on 74 for the first wicket, before Taylor was caught for 38. Seven bowlers were used by Sri Lanka in 11.2 overs, with only Inoka Ranaweera taking a wicket. Matthews hit five boundaries in her 33-ball knock.
