Child’s death rocks nation

The death of Shamar Weekes has sent shockwaves through the island.

The apparent suicide of 12-year-old Shamar Weekes has left not only residents of Checker Hall, St Lucy in shock, but also the entire nation.

Weekes, a former student of the Coleridge and Parry School, was found hanging from the roof of a galvanized structure in the backyard of his home on Thursday night.

The former student of Half Moon Fort Primary was described as a loving, funny and ‘very nice boy.’

So sad, for him to take his life at 12 yrs is so frightening to me . That at that age he thought his life was so bad that he took his life n he had no one he could express his problems to. We NEED to continue to PRAY to GOD for OUR children. 🙁

at that age, I never thought of killing myself even when things went wrong. Sometimes we would be hungry or your mama beat you for something you didn’t do, but kill myself? No….maybe it’s an accident. We used to play some crazy games that could have gotten us killed, but then again, we were children….RIP

What a big beautiful smile! Only if someone knew that smile hid so much pain, unhappiness and hurt. Rest In Peace Shamar and may your death be used in a positive manner to bring attention to the children of Barbados who are suffering physical, mental and emotional abuse in their homes and schools. We as a people and a nation can not continue to turn a blind eye to our country’s children. We need to intervene and step up for their sakes. Too much child abuse is going unreported and I urge anyone who is witnessing or know of these situations to take action, speak up. At the end of the day your actions may give hope to that child and show them that someone cares for them.

Mother’s knowing their children being abused and doing nothing. Mothers giving over their daughters to used sexually for money. So wrong. These children children did not ask to be brought into this world.

Well, when a child kills himself, there are very few reason…..and the main one is abuse. And its not only the FATHER that knows his pain. Too many adults pretend they dont know whats going on while sticking their heads up some pastor’s ass believing God will save them. God isnt saving anyone of you, that responsibilty lies with yourselves.

Some one please try to get to the bottom of the story cause at twelve years old n u give trouble like any other child don’t push you to that level Of killing yourself.. Lara Thomas May 16, 2015 at 1:01 pm

Despite to some extend I agree with you that we pray and take no action …. We still need to pray for direction in how to deal with these situations cause it’s not the actions that is killing us but it’s our reaction that brings a positive or a negative impact so we still need to pray cause we don’t fight against flesh and blood but evil powers in high places that we in our own strength don’t stand a chance but with God we do … So keep praying and listening for the his direction and then take our steps in authority … Pray is highly important never leave it out!!! No offense .

At twelve he had so much to offer his self and the.. Coleridge and parry /cp
.. It tell me from primary school he been learning might have been following bad company and maybe lost his way of such behavior.. Hmmmm so what he won’t be the first or even last child to be in such position but as parents you should play a big part in your child’s or children’s life’s.. I won’t sit here and say he was very bad boy or very hard ears cause i don’t know him, I’m speaking base on the news of what the neighbors been saying… I really do hope with this past sad situation thee other day that parents would now step up and be a very good rolled model and also do there parts as a mother’s and a father cause one day you will do have regrets… I love your smile.. It amazes me that so many people in the community knew what was going on with this child but no one reached out to help, just feeding him occasionally doesn’t take him out of this abusive household. Just talking amoung yourselves doesn’t help either, why do we have to wait until something major happens before we start talking?? Call the police, call the child care board, and if that doesn’t help, call the the media, highlight his plight, its its ironic that the neighbourhood is so upset about this baby killing himself, what will you do to stop his sibling from doing the samething. I am so angry and saddened off about this.

I think the churches of Barbados should start a fund in his name and let this money help all children of Barbados who needs help benefit from it. If you dont have food or clothes; there will be a designated church in each parish that will help these kids. Someone start this fund ASAP! Businesses can get involved! Shamar death should never go unaccounted for. It really hurts. I pray for all the children in Barbados! Communities get involved! !!!!

The same community centres can be use to collect food items and clothes. Nobody can tell me it’s too late to act. God loves all the children of the world. Infact if you know of a child where you believe they need help, just do it! It not too hard to share food to a child in need. Make your home a place of comfort. I had a personal situation like this and to be honest, everyone said the child has no hope. I personally invited him over give him clothes etc. He dont pass my home without speaking. Right now as I type I pray for him continually. He was short changed because of the circumstances he was born into but that should not define his destination.

Financial problems should not be a problem of a 12 year old but that of his/her parents… Clearly you haven’t been reading the articles… There was even the landlord who asked the mother to let her take him to provide for him but she said no… If you know you can’t provide for your child why would u deprive him or her from getting it elsewhere… Anyway as I said from her response to the media and what the media witnessed between the police and her the mother “appears” unbothered… If that alone don’t speak to her frame of mind as a parent then what will…

    • tanshia May 17, 2015 at 12:35 pm

you are so right, we as parents have the responsibility of providing forour children and protecting them at all costs, that mother is very sick, mentally and even spiritually, i pray for help for her and more so the second child, may the powers that be please help that seven year old child left to suffer at her hands, may the lord have mercy on that young child who now rests in his everlasting arms.

Why does it take one child to be an example for many? Clearly this child was crying out for help and all these signs were neglected both by his parents and In his school well I’m not sure if they are guidance counselor in Barbados schools but could God he was showing some signs even to his friends please don’t let others be a satistic.Parents be more vigilant in your children life and behavior see where they are failing ask them questions about life and school don’t just spoiled them with material things and electronic and think everything is well.

The authorities need to find out about this ASAP as there is a 7 year old in the house as well , if it IS negligence then they need to take that child and charge the mother … If she couldn’t cope she should have gone for help , which is out there , There’s been no mention of a father ? anyway back to that little boy that didn’t even get as far as his teen , RIP sweetheart x

There has been no official police reports as far as I know declaring it a suicide. Until there is a medical and police report to clarify a suicide, I will be skeptical in believing suicide.

Suicide means one who takes his own life, the Bible speaks on Suicide it is not acceptable. So please tell me how he resting in Gods arms. We as people as parents need to look out for our
Children no matter what, we brought them here we’re responsible for them. Mother was negligent and should be held responsible

  127. Roger Gibbons May 16, 2015 at 9:11 pm

Mothers are supposed to look out for their children regardless of the circumstances lets get to the bottom of this. My mother raised seven sons by herself sometimes the only thing she had was her church and her God

  128. Arlette Belgrave May 17, 2015 at 8:19 am

Truly sad. Only God knows the reason for the hidden pain behind that innocent smile. May his spirit be at rest and praying for comfort for his family members.
