Barbados’ Yu Tien-Poon will be hoping to win the Under-16 division.

Barbados will be looking for glory when the CARIFTA Chess Championships get underway at the Divi Southwinds Hotel today.

In the Under-16 division, the top seeded Yu Tien-Poon of the Lodge School- the current national chess champion who recently helped to lead his school to the Under-20 Massy United Insurance Interschool chess title, will be the favourite.

Barbados will also have strong representation in the Under-20 division, where last year’s Under-16 champion Allon Richards and FIDE Master Orlando Husbands, another member of Lodge’s victorious team, will be competing.

The tournament will run until April 7 with two rounds of matches being played each day at 9:30 a.m and 3:30 p.m.
