Top quality polo at Holders on Sunday

UNNA Luxury Resorts & Residences and ICBL are joint title-sponsors of the Barbados Polo Club’s annual four-game tournament against the Cheshire Polo Club, which starts at Holders Polo Field, St James this Sunday and will include at least one 12-goal match, the highest level of polo seen in Barbados for many years.

Based in the North West of England, the Cheshire team have been touring Barbados for more than 30 years, as they enjoy a valuable warm-up before the start of their own UK season in April. The tour continues with mid-week matches on Tuesday at Holders and Thursday at Lion Castle in St Thomas, with the final back at Holders at the Big Hat Polo Party on Sunday, March 8th.

At a Press conference today at the Holders Club House, Cheshire captain Oliver Taylor said: “We’re bringing a mixed squad of players from which we can field a maximum 12-goal side, which will be the highest level of polo seen in the island in some years.” Those four players are Taylor himself, who plays off a four-goal handicap, Johnny Coddington (4), James Fielding (2) and Charlie Walton (2).

Club president Wayne Archer added: “Cheshire always field an excellent calibre of players to try and beat Barbados and we know that this tour will continue the high standard of polo already seen this year with some very close-scoring matches.” The final team line-ups for Sunday’s opening game are not yet decided, as local players and their horses are currently involved in the Roger Gooding Memorial Trophy matches.

Archer also emphasised the wider value to the island of this tournament.

“Not only do Cheshire play excellent polo, but they arrive with a huge entourage of fans, who will be seen everywhere in their distinctive red shirts. This is not only good for our sport, but also good for the island, as they rent places to stay, eat out – a lot – and need rental cars to get around Barbados.”

Taylor added: “Our huge red army is here to party, they get involved in the matches, which are always tight . . . but, whatever happens, they stay behind afterwards.”

Director of sales & marketing for UNNA, Alistair Brown, stressed his company’s commitment to the sponsorship of polo.

“Barbados is uniquely placed in the Caribbean when it comes to high quality sports, providing something a little bit different. UNNA Resorts & Residences welcomes couples and families from all over the world to our shores . . . These great events help us do that and make Barbados more widely known.”

Alex Tasker, senior vice president of business development and marketing for ICBL noted ICBLwas proud to be part of the Cheshire Tour.

“In a season which has already seen play and sportsmanship of a very high level. I expect even greater rivalry between these two teams and would encourage all to bring their family and friends.”
