Ex-boyfriend fined for assault
A St Michael man found out today just how expensive a slap can be, after he was ordered to pay his ex-girlfriend $700 in compensation.
Jamar Damian Reid of Mount Friendship Road, St Michael pleaded guilty to assaulting Melanie Cox and stealing her cellular phone last December 6.
During the incident in question, the 28-year-old Reid saw Cox sitting in a van at Nursery Drive and, after calling out her name, ordered her to get out of the vehicle.
When she refused, he entered the van and held on to her handbag. He also grabbed her cellular phone and slapped her in her face.
The woman, who sought medical attention, produced $652. 12 in medical bills in the court today.
Acting Magistrate Alliston Seale ordered that the compensation be paid in two months or Reid will have to spend six months in prison.
He also has to pay a $250 fine in one month for stealing the cellular phone, with an alternative of two months in jail.
Cox asked the court to warn Reid to stop calling, texting or threatening her.
“Behave yourself!” the acting magistrate ordered Reid, “you have to learn to take ‘a done’. Stop following about the woman or you’re going to [put] yourself in serious trouble.”
