High standard for 2015 polo season
The 2015 polo season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years.
This was revealed by secretary of the Barbados Polo Club, Stuart Gill, during a press conference at the Holder’s Hill Polo Club to officially launch the opening of the new season earlier today.
Speaking to members of the media, Gill said he expected both the upcoming Digicel/ICBL Villages tour, as well as the Diamonds International Battle of the Sexes competitions to be of an extremely high standard.
He said he also expected the Cheshire tour and the Barbados Open events to be extremely competitive.
“We have some very competitive players coming for this tournaments.
“For the Villages tour we have a five-goal player in Francesco Bilboa who will be coming to compete. For anyone who doesn’t know much about polo, a five-goal player is an extremely skilled player,” Gill explained.
“The highest ranking is 10, and the highest player we’ve ever had here in Barbados is an eight-goal player. So we are very excited to have such a skilled player coming to play.”
During that first tour, players from the US and Argentina will come up against some of the island’s best players.
Gill admitted in the eagerly anticipated Battle of the Sexes tournament, they were also some experienced and skilled women expected to compete, which would make it all the more exciting.
“I think this year that particular tournament is going to be very interesting and the level of player that is coming this year is excellent.
“To have three two-goal ladies in Barbados to play is exceptional. The highest ranked female players in the world are like four, so these are very, very good players,” he added.
The Villages Tour is set to run from January 27 to February 1, while the Battle of the Sexes will start on February 1 and end on February 8.
